Strong 4th Quarter Powers Lady Eagles to Second Win of the Season

Game Recap:
The Lady Eagles used a dominant fourth quarter to defeat Point University 66-55, earning their first win over the NAIA opponent since February 2011. After entering the final period trailing by one, PCC outscored the Skyhawks 21-9 over the closing 10 minutes to secure its second straight victory to open the season.

Clara Bieber got the Lady Eagles on the board just six seconds into the game, and a putback by Sky Boyd gave PCC a 4-0 lead less than a minute into the opening quarter. Point pulled within three at 10-7, but free throws from Rachel Phelps and two baskets by Boyd helped the Lady Eagles build an 18-7 advantage. The Skyhawks narrowed the gap before the end of the quarter, leaving PCC with a 20-12 lead.

The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter as Point worked to chip away at the deficit. Zariah Fannin scored 12 points in the period to help the Skyhawks outscore PCC 19-15, but the Lady Eagles maintained a 35-31 halftime advantage. With 14 combined fouls and the teams shooting a combined 4-for-18 from beyond the arc, the opening half set the stage for a physical finish.

Point continued to push in the third quarter, eventually tying the game at 41-41. A basket by Reagan Moilan and free throws from Bieber helped PCC stay in front, but a Skyhawks three-pointer with fewer than 10 seconds remaining gave Point a 46-45 lead entering the fourth.

Facing their first second-half deficit of the season, the Lady Eagles responded. Boyd opened the quarter with a jumper to reclaim the lead before Jada Peterson answered with a three-pointer for the Skyhawks.

Following an offensive rebound by Phelps, Maddie Sellars knocked down her first three-pointer of the season off an assist from Micah Coalson. Sellars then added a steal and layup, putting PCC ahead by three and shifting the momentum back to the Lady Eagles.

With fewer than five minutes remaining, PCC held a narrow 56-53 advantage. Back-to-back layups by Boyd helped create separation, and the Lady Eagles closed the game on a 10-2 run. Boyd scored seven points during that finishing stretch, while Abby Matney added a three-pointer to help seal the 66-55 victory.

Boyd led PCC with 23 points and six rebounds, while Bieber recorded her first collegiate double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Both players logged 30 minutes in the win. Ahrens, Matney, Phelps, Moilan, Sellars, and Coalson also contributed to the scoring as the Lady Eagles shot 44% from the field.
