Lady Eagles Sweep Their Tri-Match with Clinton and Freed-Hardeman

Clinton College Recap:
The Lady Eagles returned to their home court on Saturday after a long stretch of road play, hosting Clinton College (NCCAA DI) and Freed-Hardeman University (NAIA) in a tri-match. The day could not have gone better for the Lady Eagles, who delivered back-to-back sweeps, including a dramatic 34-32 finish against Clinton in the opener and a gritty three-set battle against Freed-Hardeman to close the night.

In the opening match against Clinton College, the Lady Eagles wasted no time setting the tone for the day. The first set alone featured 13 lead changes and 12 ties, proving early that this was going to be a true back-and-forth battle with both teams showing tremendous grit. Trailing 21-23 late in the set, the Lady Eagles refused to fold. Sydney Anderson took over, recording back-to-back kills to tie it at 23. After a forced attacking error by Clinton, Anderson capped the comeback with a solo block to secure the set, 26-24.

Despite the closeness of the opener, the Lady Eagles came out strong in the second, jumping ahead 6-2. Clinton quickly responded, tying the set at 8-8, but the Eagles settled back in. A service ace by Olivia Boyd and a kill from Metzker helped push the lead to 24-20, and the Eagles closed out the set, 25-22.

The third set, however, turned into an instant classic. The Lady Eagles held a slim lead early before Clinton surged ahead, maintaining control for much of the middle stages. Down by their largest deficit of the match at 14-18, the Eagles showed their trademark resilience, clawing back to even things at 19-19. What followed was nearly 15 minutes of point-for-point action, with neither team willing to give an inch. After falling behind 23-24, Coach Vanderboegh called a timeout to rally his team for another push. Out of the huddle, Allie Whiting delivered a clutch kill to extend the set. A shared block from Stephensand Metzker then gave the Eagles match point at 25-24. The tension only mounted from there, as both sides traded blows deep into the 30s. At 32-32, Anderson struck again with a perfectly executed first-ball kill, setting up the Eagles' final chance. On the next rally, Boyd delivered the decisive touch, tipping the ball off the Clinton block to seal a thrilling 34-32 victory and a three-set sweep. It marked the highest-scoring set in recent program history, and it was the grit, competitive drive, and unrelenting team effort of the Lady Eagles that ultimately carried them to victory in this unforgettable battle.

Freed-Hardeman University Recap:

After nearly two hours of rest, the Lady Eagles squared off against Freed-Hardeman for the first time in program history. The contest proved just as tight, with the Eagles taking three close sets, 25-23, 25-21, and 27-25. In the opening set, the teams battled back and forth before the Eagles built a 15-10 lead midway through. Freed responded with a 6-1 run to even the score at 16-16, but the Eagles held strong down the stretch, finishing 25-23 to stay perfect at home without dropping a set.

In the second, the Eagles again gained control early, jumping to a 17-10 advantage. Despite late pushes from the Lady Lions, and a stretch that saw five service errors between the two sides in just seven points, the Eagles never lost command, closing out the set 25-21.

With the memory of their marathon third set against Clinton still fresh, both teams braced for another thriller. Down 8-12 and later 11-17, the Eagles seemed on the verge of surrendering their first home set of the season. But momentum swung back behind an Anderson kill, a Metzker/Stephens block, and an ace from Boyd to bring the score within one at 17-18. Freed-Hardeman pushed back to lead 22-18, but the Eagles' resilience shone once again. Facing set point at 22-24, the Lady Eagles stormed back, capitalizing on back-to-back attacking errors by Freed before an ace from Madisyn Kandel gave them a 25-24 lead. After the Lady Lions tied it once more, a service error opened the door for the Eagles, and Metzker and Stephens sealed the deal with one final block. With a 27-25 win, the Lady Eagles completed the sweep, their first victory over Freed-Hardeman in program history.

With the wins, the Lady Eagles improve to 9-4 on the season and remain undefeated at home, without dropping a single set on their home court. All four of their losses this year have come against NAIA opponents, further underscoring their ability to battle at a high level.
