Lady Eagles Make History on Senior Night, Closing the Season Undefeated at Home

Game Recap:
After a big victory at Southeastern Baptist this past Tuesday, the Lady Eagles were looking to secure their final home win of the season. It was Senior Night for the Lady Eagles, and they honored Kristin Mentzer, Alissa Brewer, and Mellany Bowser for their incredible contributions throughout the season. Today, they were set to play the final game of the season before postseason play. Their opponent was Trinity Baptist. The last time the teams met at Trinity Baptist, the Lady Eagles came out on top with a 67-50 victory. So, the Lady Eagles were determined to finish their final home game with another win. The Lady Eagles dominated the first half, leading 53-27 at halftime. The lead was simply too large for Trinity Baptist to overcome, and the Lady Eagles secured an 83-61 victory, finishing the season undefeated at home and extending their win streak to 15 games as they head into postseason play.

The game started with senior Mellany Bowser hitting a three-pointer to kick off the scoring for the Lady Eagles. The teams traded baskets for a bit, but then Mellany Bowser hit three consecutive three-pointers, putting the Lady Eagles up 16-8 with an early lead. The Lady Eagles then went on a 13-2 run to extend their lead to 29-10. To close out the first quarter, Gracee Bieber hit a layup to put the Lady Eagles up 31-15.

In the second quarter, Amy Ahrens started the scoring for the Lady Eagles with a quick layup. The team then went on a 12-0 run, with Mellany Bowser capping it off with a huge three-pointer, putting the Lady Eagles up 45-17. The Lady Eagles controlled the rest of the quarter, and Amber Dudek scored a layup to finish the second quarter strong with a 53-27 lead. Mellany Bowser led all scorers at halftime with 18 points.

After the break, Rachel Phelps opened the second half with a quick layup to start the scoring for the Lady Eagles. The team went on several smaller runs throughout the quarter, outscoring Trinity Baptist 22-13 this quarter. Mellany Bowser capped off the Lady Eagles' scoring for the quarter with another big three-pointer. This three-pointer tied the record for eight three-pointers made in a single game by a Lady Eagle, matching her former teammates Leah Phelps and Jenna Wolford. The fourth quarter began with a jumper from Sky Boyd, bringing the Lady Eagles' lead to 77-43. Trinity Baptist was unable to mount a comeback, and the Lady Eagles went on to win the game 83-61.

Senior Mellany Bowser led the team in scoring with 25 points, one block, and one rebound. Sky Boyd followed with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. The seniors shined brightly tonight, combining for 39 points. The Lady Eagles will surely miss these three seniors next year, as they have left the program better than it was. The Lady Eagles also completed their season undefeated at home, finishing strong as they head into the postseason.

What's Next:
The Lady Eagles will enter the Region Tournament as the No. 1 seed, and their opponent will be determined by the winner of the play-in game next week. The Region Tournament will be held at Bob Jones University, and Coach Sellars will be looking to secure his 9th Regional Championship next weekend.
