Lady Eagles Battle Out a Physical Victory over Trinity Baptist

Game Recap:
After a lengthy trip to Texas, the Lady Eagles returned home for just 24 hours before heading back out on the road. Their first stop was Jacksonville, FL, where they faced off against Trinity Baptist College in a highly physical South Region matchup. Both teams battled fiercely for all 40 minutes, but the Lady Eagles emerged with their first region win of the season.

The Lady Eagles won the opening tipoff, and freshman Abigail Winslow quickly set the tone by scoring 6 consecutive points, propelling the team to an early 6-0 lead. Despite struggling from beyond the arc, going 0-7 on three-point attempts in the first quarter, the Lady Eagles forced 9 turnovers, which helped them maintain a 17-13 lead after the first period.

Trinity Baptist fought back in the second quarter, closing the gap to just a 21-23 deficit. However, Abby Matney made an impactful play, converting an and-one three-pointer with 5 minutes left in the half. This play sparked a run that helped the Lady Eagles extend their lead to 32-25 by halftime.

After their second-lowest scoring half of the season, the Lady Eagles struggled again in the third quarter, scoring only 12 points and committing 8 turnovers. Senior Alissa Brewer led the charge in the period, contributing 6 points on perfect shooting (2-2 FG, 2-2 FT), keeping the Lady Eagles ahead with a 44-34 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the Lady Eagles opened with a 7-3 run, extending their lead to 14 points with less than 7 minutes to play. However, Trinity Baptist mounted a quick response, going on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to just 5 points with under 5 minutes remaining. But the youthful energy and skill of sophomores Sky Boyd and Gracee Bieber, along with freshmen Abigail Winslow and Amy Ahrens, helped the Lady Eagles close the game on a 16-4 run, sealing a 67-50 victory.

Sky Boyd led the team with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Abigail Winslow followed closely behind with 15 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Kristin Mentzer, though not a major scorer in tonight's game, played a crucial role in other areas, finishing with a team-high 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals in 33 minutes of play.
