Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Andrew Ahrens

2025 Opens with a Dominant Victory in Texas

Game recap:
After a long Christmas break, the Lady Eagles traveled to Texas for back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, Thursday's game against Dallas Christian was canceled due to weather, so the Lady Eagles focused on their Friday matchup against Southwestern Adventist University. Despite a slow start to the game coming off the Christmas break, the Lady Eagles regrouped and were up 45-29 at halftime. They never looked back, going on to secure an 88-55 victory in a strong statement win to kick off the second semester.

The Knights came out strong, taking an early 14-3 lead. However, the Lady Eagles responded by subbing in four fresh players, which sparked a 10-0 run to pull the game within one point. The rest of the first quarter was competitive, but the Lady Eagles managed to take the lead, finishing the period up 19-18. Amber Dudek started the second quarter with a quick three-pointer for the Lady Eagles, which sparked another massive 14-0 run to extend their lead. The Lady Eagles entered halftime with a commanding 45-29 advantage, with Abby Matney and Abigail Winslow leading the scoring, each contributing 9 points.

After the break, Kristin Mentzer opened the third quarter with a quick jumper for the Lady Eagles. They then went on another 9-0 run, capped off by a jumper from Rachel Phelps, putting them ahead 56-34. The rest of the quarter was back-and-forth, but to end the third, Rachel Phelps hit a buzzer-beater layup, assisted by Mellany Bowser, to give the Lady Eagles a 66-43 lead going into the final period. To start the fourth quarter, Mellany Bowser hit a three-pointer, and the Lady Eagles never looked back. They controlled the final period, winning the quarter 22-11 and securing the 88-55 victory. It was a dominant performance for the Lady Eagles in their first game back after a long Christmas break.

Offensively, Abigail Winslow led the Lady Eagles with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 5 assists. Followed by the Texas native Rachel Phelps scoring 11 points and also recording an assist, and two steals. In total, the Lady Eagles had 11 players who contributed to the scoring in this all-around team win.

What's Next:
