Eagles Fall Below .500 with Loss to Welch College

Game Recap:
After a strong win against the Spurgeon Knights, the Eagles faced off against Welch College just before the Thanksgiving break. Having lost four of their last five matchups, the Eagles aimed to start a new winning streak against the Flames. The game proved to be a back-and-forth affair, with ten lead changes throughout, as both teams fought hard with neither side gaining a lead larger than six points. In the end, however, the game didn't go the Eagles' way as they narrowly fell 64-67 to Welch College.

The game began with a flurry of action, with three lead changes in the opening minute setting the stage for a tightly contested battle. The teams traded baskets almost possession by possession, and the largest lead of the first half was just six points, held by the Eagles with 10:35 remaining in the half. Both teams were tied in field goals (11 each) and three-pointers (3 each), but Welch College won the rebounding battle 23-18, which helped them take a 30-27 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Welch quickly built a six-point lead, the largest of the game, just 90 seconds into the second half. But a putback layup by Colin Wilkerson got the Eagles on the board and halted the Flames' momentum. Despite a valiant effort from the Eagles, Welch continued to fend them off. For an eight-minute stretch, Liam Gerdts was on fire, scoring 15 of the Eagles' 17 points in that span, keeping his team in the game. The Eagles had two opportunities in the final seconds, first with 1.7 seconds left and again with 0.5 seconds remaining, but the Flames were able to deflect both passes, denying the Eagles a chance at a buzzer-beater. In the end, Welch held on to secure the 64-67 victory.

Leading the Eagles tonight was junior Liam Gerdts, with his 27 points and 10 rebounds, Gerdts recorded his third double-double of the season leading the Eagles in both points and rebounds. With another strong performance, Aaron Wagner totaled 14 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.
