Lady Eagles Win Their Largest Comeback of the Season

Game Recap:
After enduring two consecutive losses, the Lady Eagles were back on the road to challenge NCAA DIII opponent Covenant College. With a tied 1-1 record against the Scots in their history, the Lady Eagles were eager to tip the balance in their favor. With a sluggish start to the game, the Lady Eagles found themselves trailing by 14 points heading into the 4th quarter. However, in a stunning display of determination, the Lady Eagles erupted in the final quarter and completed an impressive comeback to win 60-57!
 
The game got off to a rough start for the Lady Eagles, as they struggled offensively, scoring just 8 points in the first quarter—the lowest of the season. A major factor in the slow start was the defense of the Scots, who forced 12 turnovers. Along with the turnovers, the Lady Eagles only managed three field goals in the opening period. In the second quarter, however, the Lady Eagles found their offensive rhythm, doubling their made field goals. Unfortunately, they continued to battle turnovers, committing 10 more. Heading into halftime, the Lady Eagles were down 34-48.
 
After the break, the Lady Eagles showed resilience, cutting down on their turnovers to just 2 in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the Scots were able to maintain their momentum, scoring their highest quarter of the game with 19 points. By the end of the third, the Lady Eagles faced their largest deficit of the game, down by 14 points. But the tides turned in the fourth quarter. The Lady Eagles came out firing, going on an incredible 14-0 run in the first five minutes, erasing the Scots' lead. With the game tied, the Lady Eagles took their first lead since the opening minutes, with 4:24 left in the game. With the score at 56-57 in favor of Covenant, senior Kristin Mentzer swiped her third steal of the game with 13 seconds remaining, leading to a fast-break layup from Sky Boyd, giving the Lady Eagles a 58-57 lead. With no timeouts remaining, the Scots quickly inbounded the ball but immediately stepped out of bounds. With 5 seconds remaining, Alissa Brewer calmly sunk two free throws, extending the lead to 60-57. The final buzzer sounded, and the Lady Eagles had completed the largest comeback of the season to win the game.
 
Sophomore Sky Boyd led the Lady Eagles offensively, scoring a game-high 21 points, with 14 of those coming in the pivotal fourth quarter. Fellow sophomore Rachel Phelps contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals, while freshman Amy Ahrens grabbed 8 rebounds and added 10 points to the victory.

Monday, the Lady Eagles will be hosting Welch College before Thanksgiving break. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM, come out or tune into the Lady Eagles as they look to grab their 9th win of the season!
