Eagles Win Their First Game of the Season

Game Recap:
To kick off the 2024 season, the Eagles squared off against William's Baptist College for the first time in the program's history. Securing a win in the season opener was a milestone the Eagles hadn't achieved since the 2018-2019 season. With a strong start, the Eagles jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and ultimately clinched a 69-67 victory over WBU.

In the opening moments of the game, junior transfer Josh Azucena scored 7 points within the first two and a half minutes, helping the Eagles establish their early advantage. Both teams experienced a three-minute scoring drought in the first half, during which senior Stephen Fike came off the bench to contribute 9 points in just 9 minutes, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field. With 8 players scoring in the first half, the Eagles headed into the break with a 37-31 lead.

As the second half commenced, WBU surged ahead with an 11-0 run, taking a five-point lead. The Eagles struggled offensively, going over 8 minutes without a field goal, but Liam Gerdts broke the drought with a shot at the 11:19 mark, reducing the deficit to 4 points. Following this, the Eagles ignited their offense, going on a 14-2 run to reclaim a 7-point lead. As the game tightened in the final moments, the Eagles secured the home victory with a narrow 69-67 win, marking their first triumph of the season.

Leading the charge offensively for the Eagles was Josh Azucena with 17 points and 3 assists, closely followed by Liam Gerdts, who added 14 points and 5 assists. As a team, the Eagles managed to force 34 turnovers, turning those opportunities into 35 points off turnovers. With a shooting percentage of 46% from the field and 29% from beyond the arc, the Eagles have ample room for improvement as they progress through the early stages of the 2024-2025 season.

What's Next:
Friday night, the Eagles will face Trinity College of Florida in their first Pensacola Invitational game. Saturday, the Eagles will play Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to close out their opening week of the regular season.
