The season has just begun for the Eagles soccer and Lady Eagles volleyball teams—and they're determined to learn from each lesson and pursue growth. As Eagles, both teams share the familiar team verse, Isaiah 40:31. This fall, they are ready to soar.
"When an eagle sees a storm, it flies into the storm and embraces it. The storm allows the eagle to go higher and soar above it," said Joe Liwosz, the Eagles soccer coach. "As a team and individually, we encourage each other to use the storms we experience to make us stronger. Most of all, we want to develop a team that best represents our team, the school, and God."
"Sore today, soar tomorrow"—that's the volleyball motto this year. "We are working on mental toughness," said their coach, Calyn Ohman. She has been reiterating the Eagle Way, the qualities that define a Christlike athlete, "to prepare us not only for the season but also for the adversities that might come later in life. We know we have to put in the hard work to be able to soar to new heights this year." What each player learns during practices and games goes beyond the sport—and can be applied to their personal lives even after graduation.
Outside hitter Bethany Gamble (Jr., TN) said, "My team and I prepare by 'working on the details' at every practice and every game. This is our coach's reminder for us to focus on the fundamentals," she continued. "I have loved the opportunity to be a part of this team. Not only are my teammates my friends, but they are my family. I trust my teammates and am so grateful that God allowed me to have the opportunity to play with them."
The volleyball team is eager. "We have 12 returners, and they all have one or more seasons of experience. We hope to see lots of growth," said Ohman.
At the beginning of the summer, the soccer team took home workout packets to keep in shape and sharp on the ball. They also stayed in touch through a group chat, motivating each other with their goals and staying strong in the Lord.
"The team has put in a ton of work in preparation for this season regardless of being in different parts of not only the nation but the world," said mid-fielder David Stiefel (Jr., CA). "One of our goals is to leave a lasting impact on those around us, whether in the classroom, on the field, or at events such as Christian service or Eagle Mania. We want to let others know that we take pride in being a part of Pensacola Christian College and because of the people that God has blessed us with day in and day out."
Coach Liwosz said, "I feel very confident that we have the ability for a great season. This fall, we added 14 new and very talented players to the group we already have. I would love to see us do well against some of our historically tougher scheduled teams and make another run for a National Tournament appearance."
The volleyball team's ultimate goal is to win Regionals this year. With one win in the books, they'll focus on one game and "one day at a time," said Brittney Hunter (Jr., FL). "As we put in the hard work now and strive for excellence, it will pay off. During the games, we play for the glory of God and always give our 110% on that court, so whether we win or lose, we can walk away with our heads held high knowing we did our best."
Graduating senior Riley Rhodes (PA) said, "This year's team is a fun group of guys who are hungry to win. We want to make a run at the National Tournament. For me, that's the way I want to end my career as an Eagle."
However they will achieve their wins this year, the soccer and volleyball teams are strong and determined to glide into—and then rise above—the storms.
