On Friday, February 5, the Eagles faced Trinity Baptist College for the second time this season. Their previous meeting had not ended well for the Eagles, losing by 24 points. Although the previous game had been only four weeks earlier, the Eagles had grown immensely as a team and as individual players. They knew that with this growth they had a chance to take down the top team in the South Region and the number seven ranked team in the country.
The Eagles started out the game strong.
John Clay put in the first bucket of the game followed by two 3-pointers by
Christian Porter. A pair of free throws from
AJ Ward and a made 3-pointer from Caleb Ifill put the Eagles ahead 7 points. What started out as a great half for the Eagles quickly turned cold as the Eagles went the next four minutes without scoring a bucket. Now down by 7 points, the Eagles had a lot of ground to make up before the end of the half.
John Clay led the comeback scoring a 3-pointer, a 2-point shot, and a free throw to bring the Eagles with in 1 point. A few plays later,
John Clay hit an another 3-pointer to tie the game. In the final minute of the half, Trinity took the lead again with a score of 31–34.
The Eagles came out in the second half with a determination to finish to the game strong. Shots by
AJ Ward,
Will Higdon, and
John Clay quickly gave the Eagles back the lead. Trinity responded and tied the game, before
John Clay hit a 3- pointer. The Eagles would keep the lead for the rest of the game. By the 11-minute mark, the Eagles had widened the gap to 11 points, but Trinity did not back down easily. TBC got within 1 point of the Eagles, but the Eagles stood their ground. Around the 5-minute mark, the Eagles went on an 11–2 run. This run sealed the Eagles victory. The final score was 73–65.
"Tonight was a big region win over the #7 team in the country," Coach Goetsch said. "We knew we had to play physical and win on defense but also attack the paint and take it at their defense.
John Clay had a solid night in his first start this year.
AJ Ward had a big second half, and
Christian Porter got eight boards from the point guard position. Tonight's game gives us two region wins in a row and we are ready to go get number three on Tuesday!"
