Third Quarter Shooting Slump Results in Lady Eagles Loss

On February 2, the Lady Eagles faced the Faulkner University Eagles for the second time this season. The previous match-up had been an exhibition game and the Lady Eagles first competition of the season. Coming into the game, the Lady Eagles were 0–5 against Faulkner, and while they knew it would be a big challenge, the Lady Eagles were looking to beat Faulkner for the first time in program history.

The Lady Eagles started out the game strong. Setting up defensively in a full-court press, they were able to pressure Faulkner into missing several easy shots. Offensively, Hope Baker led the charge, scoring 8 of the Lady Eagles first 10 points and helping the Lady Eagles to take the early lead. Strong defensive pressure combined with good offensive flow allowed PCC to keep the lead until the final minute of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter the Lady Eagles allowed Faulkner to make a quick basket. Though the Lady Eagles answered with a bucket of their own, the next few minutes became an offensive game, as one team would score and the other would score immediately after. Around the six-minute mark, Alissa Brewer answered the call and scored 12 straight points for the Lady Eagles. In the final minute, Sandy McElhaney made a 3-pointer, allowing the Lady Eagles to take the lead into the second half.

For the first time against Faulkner, the Lady Eagles came into the second half with a lead. They hoped to capitalize on what they had done in the first half. A made 3-pointer by Hope Baker followed by an additional steal and breakaway layup seemed to be just the start the Lady Eagles were wanting. However, the Lady Eagles were unable to put the ball in the basket, and 3 minutes passed before they scored again. The next basket was not made until their last possession of the quarter. The Lady Eagles finished the quarter with a 19 percent field goal percentage, shooting only 8 percent from the 3-point line.

A dry third quarter for the Lady Eagles caused them to lose their lead and fall behind by 7 points, but they were determined to come back. In the Lady Eagles first possession of the quarter, Sandy McElhaney scored a 3-pointer and followed it with another made shot during the next possession. The Lady Eagles appeared to find the defensive and offensive determination of the first half, but the dry shooting spell of the third quarter was too much for them to overcome. The Lady Eagles tied the game but soon fell behind again.

The final score was 66–72. Hope Baker lead the Lady Eagles in points with 19. Sandy McElhaney added 15 points. Lauran Alvarez led in both assists with 6 and rebounds with 22.

The Lady Eagles next game is Friday, February 5, against Trinity Baptist College.
