On February 5, the Lady Eagles faced Trinity Baptist College. The teams had competed almost a month earlier at Trinity. It had been a close match-up with the Lady Eagles winning by only two points. Heading into the game, the Lady Eagles knew that it could be a historic match as
Sandy McElhaney sat only 26 points away from being the fifth Lady Eagle to score 1,000 career points.
The Lady Eagles started out the first quarter on fire.
Sandy McElhaney and
Lauran Alvarez hit three 3-pointers in a little over two minutes, putting the Lady Eagles up by 7 points. The full-court press the Lady Eagles had set -up to start the quarter was now becoming effective as several forced turnovers allowed the Lady Eagles to gain 3 more buckets. Two 3-pointers by
Jenna Wolford put the Lady Eagles up by 13 points, before another 3-pointer by
Sandy McElhaney gave the Lady Eagles their largest lead of the quarter. However, before the quarter ended, TBC was able to go on a quick run, decreasing the Lady Eagles lead to only 10.
The second quarter was an evenly matched competition. Though the Lady Eagles quickly gave up a 3-pointer to start the quarter, they answered with a bucket of their own. Around the 4-minute mark, TBC appeared to be on a comeback as the Lady Eagles dropped to their lowest lead of the quarter, 6 points.
Sandy McElhaney, Lauren Alvarez, and
Alissa Brewer each scored to give the Lady Eagles back their lead. Although their lead reached a high of 12 points before the half, two free-throw opportunities by TBC dropped it back down to 10. The Lady Eagles headed into the second half, leading 43–33.
Beginning the second half, the Lady Eagles appeared to be slow moving as their lead quickly dropped to 5 points. However, it was not long before the team had found their fire again as
Lauran Alvarez scored 2 points followed by back–to–back buckets by
Alissa Brewer to complete a 6–2 run. The Lady Eagles continued to play well, lengthening their lead to 16 with four minutes still left to play. Although the Lady Eagles could not sustain their 16-point lead, they were still able to remain 10 points ahead going into the fourth quarter.
Having established a solid lead, the Lady Eagles could now focus on helping
Sandy McElhaney achieve the goal of scoring 1,000 career points. Heading into the fourth quarter, McElhaney had 13 points which meant she would need to double her points in order to accomplish the task. McElhaney's first bucket of the quarter happened around the 7:30 mark, a three pointer with an assist by Alvarez. A few plays later, McElhaney scored back to back possessions, putting her 6 points away from hitting 1,000. Around the 3-minute mark, McElhaney scored a 3-pointer to put her one bucket away from the mark. With just under two minutes left in the game,
Hope Baker dribbled the ball up the floor and passed it off to McElhaney on the wing. McElhaney took the 3-point shot and drained it, officially becoming the fifth Lady Eagle basketball player to hit 1,000 career points.
The Lady Eagles won the game 82–67.
"Tonight was a great win!" Coach Sellars said. "Lauran and Sandy played really well. We are fortunate to have two of the best guards in the country. When they are on, we are hard to beat. I was really proud of the way our team was pushing for Sandy to get her one thousandth point, and when she did, I loved how our team celebrated that moment with her. Sandy is a great player and I'm so glad I get to coach her. I can't wait until she hits 1,500 points."
