Strong First Quarter Propels Lady Eagles to Victory over Bob Jones

The Lady Eagles hosted the Bob Jones Bruins in a regional matchup in front of a large home crowd on Saturday that resulted in an 88-66 win for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles played aggressively in the first quarter, using a full-court press, forcing turnovers, and keeping the Bruins' offense off balance. The Bruins' attempts to be aggressive defensively backfired as they resulted in five fouls in the first 5 minutes of the game. No.10 Caitlyn Benedik came off the bench and scored 13 points in the first quarter to help the Lady Eagles take an early 33-14 lead. The Lady Eagles struggled to replicate their offensive success in the second quarter, achieving only a 25 field goal percentage (their lowest FG percentage in a quarter since January 25) and 20 percent from the three. In spite of their offensive struggles, the Lady Eagles still outscored the Bruins 20-10 in the second quarter because of their stellar work on defense. After a small 5-0 scoring run to close out the quarter, the Lady Eagles headed for the locker rooms up 51-24.

After halftime, No. 2 Sandy McElhaney opened the third quarter with a pair of three pointers and a steal to help extend the Lady Eagles' lead. The Bruins found some success on offense in the third and outscored the Lady Eagles 17-16 but still trailed by 28 points as the final quarter began. No. 44 Claire Jordan began the scoring in the fourth quarter when she forced her way into the paint and was fouled while making her shot. She then proceeded to sink the free throw as well. The Bruins were able to outscore the Lady Eagles 25-19 in the fourth, thanks to an 8-0 scoring run in the opening 3 minutes. But it wasn't enough as the Lady Eagles' strong first quarter had given them a lead that they had not relinquished for the rest of the game. The Lady Eagles' ability to force turnovers and their success from the free throw line (29 of 30 FTs) helped them take an 88-66 victory over the Bruins.

Head Coach Jared Sellars shared his thoughts on the team's performance, "I was really impressed with our defensive pressure and intensity. Our focus on the defensive end really set the tone for us. It's always a great environment when we play Bob Jones, home and away. It's always a very exciting game. Our focus was there the whole game and that's something we have been talking a lot about. Complete focus on every play, and I think that showed in most of the game. Bob Jones is a really good team, with great players and a great coaching staff. We are really excited anytime that we are able to play and finish strong like we did on Saturday."
