John Clay took the ball in his hands with seven seconds remaining in the game, got his man to lean and then took it hard to the basket, maneuvering around two other defenders, and laid in a right-handed layup to seal an 80-78 win for the Eagles.
The Eagles (9-20) got off to a blistering start from the field, jumping up 27-18 at the 10-minute mark of the first half. But the Tigers of Trinity College were not going to give up that early and finished the half on a 26-13 run to take a 44-40 lead into the locker room. The Eagles maintained balanced scoring in the first half led by
John Clay's ten points,
Austin Lewis contributed 8 points, 7 points from
Noah Rawlings, and 6 points chipped in by
Deric Woods.
The second half began with the Eagles going on an 11-2 run to begin the half and then holding the lead for the duration of the second half. However, the Tigers would tie the game at 78 behind three free throws by Nile Bright. Charles Peeples led Trinity College with 21 points and Bright ended with 15 points.
The Eagles got three threes from
AJ Ward in the second half; he finished with four threes and 14 points.
John Clay paced the way for the Eagles with 22 points while Ward was joined by fellow Pensacola Christian Academy alumni
Austin Lewis with 14 points.
The Eagles finish the regular season Saturday in Toccoa Falls, GA, taking on the screaming Eagles of Toccoa Falls in a 2 p.m. CST tipoff.
