Rams Rematch Downs Eagles in the Nest

The Eagles played a rematch against the University of Mobile Rams (NAIA) that resulted in a 75-106 loss for the Eagles.

Rams' guard Will Stanford started off the Ram's offense with a handful of quick drives to the basket. The Eagles closed the open lane and forced several turnovers that opened up baskets on the other end of the court. The Rams then began moving the ball and found several open threes and baskets in the paint. They also started playing tighter defense on the Eagles, leaving little room for clear passes that forced the Eagles to make several mistakes. With the score now 6-20 in the Rams' favor, just six minutes in, the Eagles would have to switch up their offensive play if they wanted to close the gap.

As the Eagles adjusted their offense to include more ball movement, the Rams switched up their defense to counter. Noah Rawlings found several threes that brought the Eagles within 10 points, 20-30. AJ Ward checked in and grabbed several big rebounds that kept the Rams from getting second looks under the basket.

Although the Eagles managed to get some points on the boards, the Ram's dribble-drive penetration did not seem to stop. The Rams utilized their size advantage to muscle their way in the paint. Christian Porter brought the Eagles back within reach after hitting several threes. The Eagles went into halftime down 16 to the Rams, 34-50.

At the start of the second half, the Rams picked up where they left off by bodying their way to the basket in the paint. Rams' post player, Darius Curry, bodied his way to a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Rams' guard, Logan Foutz, posed a threat from behind the three-point line after he hit five three-pointers in quick succession. The Rams and Eagles continued to exchange baskets on each end of the court for the remainder of the game. The Eagles found their offensive game from behind the three-point line, but it was not enough to make a comeback against the Rams. The Rams finished out the game with 106 points, defeating the Eagles on the Eagles' home court.

Coach Goetsch shared his thoughts on tonight's rematch: "It was difficult to do what we needed to against a much stronger Mobile team. We struggled to penetrate the paint and were not able to work the ball inside to post players. Therefore, we were forced to live and die by the three-ball tonight. We knocked down 17 threes, a new school record on 38 attempts. Noah Rawlings hit 5, John Clay–4, Christian Porter–3, Austin Lewis and Chance Roberson each with 2, and Grant Smith with 1."
