Eagles Struggle in Bruins Rematch

The Eagles faced the talented Bob Jones Bruins in the Nest that resulted in a 59-84 win for the Bruins.

With the Eagles' primary post player (Dakota Pratt) injured with a fracture, the Eagles knew that they would need to dig even deeper if they wanted to win today's game. Head Coach Mark Goetsch started Anthony Horton in Pratt's place. Horton gave the Eagles several quick baskets and had a near dunk when he drove through the paint to the rim in the first several minutes of the game.

The Eagles and Bruins kept at each other's heels for the first 10 minutes of the first half, Eagles 21, Bruins 22. With 8 minutes left in the first half the Bruins switched to a full-court press. The Eagles struggled to break the press for several possessions. The Bruins found several open looks under the basket and were able to pull away 29-21. For several minutes, the Eagles got caught in an offensive drought until Deric Woods spun past his man and found a layup.

The last 5 minutes of the first half the Eagles struggled to convert their shots into points. While the Eagles struggled on offense, the Bruins continued to thrive on offense. The Eagles went into halftime down fifteen to the Bruins, 26-41.

The Eagles dug deep at the start of the second half after finding a long two from AJ Ward and a deep three from John Clay and closed the gap to just nine points, 34-43! Christian Porter excited Eagles' fans as he performed a behind-the-back crossover at the top of the key and managed to cross two defenders at once. The Bruins took charge on offense again and pulled away 58-39. Porter had fans on their feet after he drove to the basket and scored a layup through contact and scored a free-throw for a three-point play.

The Bruins' offense did not slow down as they continued to convert shot attempts into baskets. The Eagles continued to struggle bringing the ball up the court after the Bruins tightened up their full-court press. The Bruins then utilized their size advantage to take control of the post by looking for 6'4 Jayson Barnhart and 6'2 Devin Dean.

The Bruins led by 20 points with just 4 minutes remaining in the second half. The Bruins extended their lead even further after finding several corner three-pointers. The Bruins finished out today's game with the W against the Eagles in the Nest.

Head Coach Mark Goetsch shared his thoughts on his team's performance: "Great credit to a talented BJU Bruins team. Their depth at each position wore us down as the game went on. Their strength wore us down leading to too many offensive rebounds and second-chance points throughout the game. For our Eagles, John Clay gave a solid performance, scoring 18 points and keeping us directed and focused on the floor."
