The Lady Eagles and the Bruins both took very different paths during Friday's tournament to reach the Regional Championship. On one hand, Bob Jones received a first round bye and defeated #4 seed Johnson University of Florida in straight sets to advance to the championship. Contrarily, the Lady Eagles had to play against Trinity Baptist College in the first round. The Lady Eagles advanced past Trinity in just 3 sets. The Lady Eagles then went on to face and defeat #2 seed Toccoa Falls in a 5 set thriller, which propelled them to the regional championship.
In the first set, the Lady Eagles matched the Bruins point-for-point through the first 20 rallies. Then, #6 Hannah Prince, came up to serve for the Bruins and helped them pull ahead by 4 points. This was the first of three 4-point runs by the Bruins which carried them to a 25-16 win in the first set.
The Lady Eagles fell behind early in the second set by a score of 7-2. They struggled to gain momentum throughout and lost the second set 12-25.
The third set began similar to the second, with the Bruins leading 9-5. But the Lady Eagles refused to end the regional tournament on a low note and rallied to take a 17-16 lead. The final 15 rallies of the match were the most exciting and tense as both teams exchanged points back and forth up to 22-21 in favor of the Bruins. In spite of their valiant comeback, the Lady Eagles were unable to overcome the Bruins blocking abilities, losing three of the last four points and making the BJU Bruins the 2019 South Regional Champions.
Head Coach
Calyn Ohman shared her thoughts on the team's performance, "When you are going up against the defending champions and MVP of the region, there are several obstacles that present themselves on the court. We came up short in the first two sets by not having a strong start. Our serving and receiving was off, not being able to convert hits into points, and too many costly errors were our downfall today. Although we had some areas that we struggled in, we did a great job spreading the offense out. These girls have improved a lot this season. In addition to improving their volleyball skills, these girls can walk away from this season knowing that God has given them lessons on how to serve Him better."
The Lady Eagles now anxiously await the results of the other regional championships in hopes of earning a bid for nationals.
