Pensacola, Florida – The Lady Eagles basketball team faced a tough NAIA opponent, Point University, in today's game that resulted in the second loss of the season 59-63.
With a heavy lineup of fresh talent this year, the Lady Eagles starting lineup consisted of 1
st year players
Leah Phelps and
Sindy McElhaney, 2
nd year players Sandy McElahney and Lauren Alvarez, and 4
th year veteran
Emma Hardy.
The Lady Eagles started the game out with a quick bucket from Lauren Alvarez. The Skyhawks and Lady Eagles exchanged buckets the first quarter that ended with the Lady Eagles behind by 2 points 16-18.
Lauran Alvarez jumpstarted the Lady Eagles' offense early the second quarter with several wide open 3-pointers. The Lady Eagles ended the first half 4 points ahead of the Skyhawks 30-26.
Lauran Alvarez contributed to the Lady Eagles' success in the first half by scoring 16 points.
Point University picked up its defensive pressure at the start of the second half and was able to force the Lady Eagles into several tough situations that resulted in turnovers for the Lady Eagles and buckets for the Skyhawks. The Lady Eagles finished the third quarter with a 37% shooting percentage from the field going 7 for 19. Point University ended the third quarter 2 points ahead of the Lady Eagles 44-42.
The Skyhawks took over at the start of the fourth quarter after they went on an 11 point run against the Lady Eagles. After their run, the Skyhawks led the game 57-45 against the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles fought back and were able to close the gap to just 4 points. With seconds left on the clock the Lady Eagles scrambled for a final 3-point attempt, but were unsuccessful. The game ended as the second loss of the season for the Lady Eagles 59-63.
Lauran Alvarez led the Lady Eagles' offense with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Although the Lady Eagles starting lineup was young, together they put up a combined 52 of the Lady Eagles 59 points.

Jared Sellars shared his thoughts on the game, "I am really proud of the way our team competed. Point is a really good team with a great coaching staff. I am glad to see us competing with them at this point in the season with such a young team. We need to improve our offensive efficiency and help defense. I am looking forward to next week as we get back to work on the court."
