PENSACOLA, Florida–Our Lady Eagles Basketball dropped a closely contested matchup with Florida College, losing 63-54 at home in tonight's non-conference home matchup.
Joy Smith led the way in scoring for the Lady Eagles while Sandy McElhaney followed close behind with 10 of her own. Jessica Boyd and Sandy McElhaney tied for the team lead with 6 rebounds apiece and Boyd also led the team with 3 assists in the contest.
The Lady Eagles fell behind early in tonight's matchup against the Florida College Falcons. The team trailed 8-2 in the opening minutes, but battled back late in the 1st quarter behind the strong offensive performance of freshman Sandy McElhaney. After one quarter of play, the Lady Eagles trailed the visiting Falcons 16-7.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle between two strong opponents. The Falcons were able to maintain their lead behind the strong offensive play of Kynese Davis who finished with a game-high 18 points. The Lady Eagles found the basket in the 2nd quarter and kept the score within nine at the half.
The third and fourth quarters went the same way for the Lady Eagles. The team was able to cut the Falcon's lead into high single digits, but they were unable to find a spark to make the game any closer. Hope Baker and Lauran Alvarez helped provide a boost off the bench for the Lady Eagles, finishing with a combined 7 points and 2 assists. Despite their best efforts, the Lady Eagles went on to lose the game 63-54 at home to the Florida College Falcons.
"We struggled to shoot the ball early in tonight's contest; we were really ice cold despite playing well defensively," Head Coach Jared Sellars said afterwards. "These girls really competed against a very strong opponent."
With tonight's defeat, the Lady Eagles dropped to 3-3 on the season. The team will look to rebound tomorrow when they take on conference foe Trinity College of Florida in a rematch of last year's NCCAA South Region Championship game.
