LAGRANGE, Georgia–Our Lady Eagles Basketball team hung on late in regulation to secure a 58-56 victory over Huntingdon College in today's non-conference road matchup.
Jessica Boyd finished with a team-leading and season-high 16 points in tonight's game against Huntingdon College.
Emma Hardy and
Joy Smith added a combined 13 points for the Lady Eagles as well.
Sandy McElhaney led the team with seven rebounds while
Ashton Welborn distributed a team-leading three assists.
The Lady Eagles followed their early season trend by jumping out to a 1st quarter advantage in tonight's road match-up against the Huntingdon Hawks.
Haley Sailors contributed five points in the opening quarter to push the team out to an early 13-7 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter.
In the 2nd quarter, the team was able to stretch their lead to as many as 15 points behind the play of
Emma Hardy and
Grace Imdieke who combined for seven of the teams 13 2nd quarter points. At the end of two quarters of play, the Lady Eagles led the Hawks 26-14.
A three-pointer by
Haley Sailors five minutes into the 3rd quarter stretched the Lady Eagles lead to 20, the highest it got during the game. The Lady Eagles continued to poor in shot after shot, but the pesky Hawks continued to hang around. The Hawks cut the Lady Eagles lead to 14 points at the end of the 3rd quarter.
In the 4th quarter, the Hawks continued to battle back into the game. Huntingdon College guard T.I. Duncan scored 10 points for her team in their comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. The Hawks were able to climb all the way back and had a shot to win the game late in regulation. A long-range heave by guard Payton Kiser knotted the game at 56 with 4 seconds left on the clock. A quick timeout gave the Lady Eagles a chance to draw up the winning play. An entry pass into
Jessica Boyd led to a foul and a chance to win the game in regulation. Boyd calmly buried both free-throws to secure a 58-56 victory over the Hawks.
The victory gives the Lady Eagles six on the season. The team, currently 6-3 and 1-0 in South Region play, will look to improve on their strong start to the season when they take on LaGrange College tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. CT in LaGrange, GA.
