Lady Eagles Pull Away Late In Victory Over LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Georgia–Our Lady Eagles shut down the LaGrange attack late in the fourth quarter and made their free throws down the stretch to secure a 62-51 win in today's non-conference matchup.

Jessica Boyd led the team with 13 points on the day. Emma Hardy (11) and Joy Smith (10) joined Boyd in double-digit scoring. Boyd also dished out a team-high four assists and grabbed a share of the team-high nine rebounds alongside Ashton Welborn.

The Lady Eagles continued their season-long success in the 1st quarter as Emma Hardy made two quick three-pointers on the way to an 8-0 run to start the game. The Lady Panthers would not go away quietly, though, countering with a 7-0 run of their own. The Lady Eagles were able to stop the counterattack and held a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Emma Hardy kept rolling in the second quarter, scoring in the paint and sinking her first two free throws to reach 10 points before the half. Jessica Boyd, who started out quiet, found her stroke with 11 seconds left in the first half as she buried a three-pointer for her first bucket of the game. The Lady Eagles entered the break with an 11-point lead and the score at 33-22.

The Lady Panthers roared out of halftime with an 8-2 run that put the Lady Eagles on their heels. With their lead cut to 5, Sandy McElhaney grabbed an offensive board, dribbled out, jab-stepped her defender, and splashed a 3-pointer to extend the lead. With less than 30 seconds left in the 3rd quarter and the Lady Panthers leading by one, Jessica Boyd hit a jumper and a layup off the Emma Hardy assist to put the Lady Eagles up 43-40. Hardy then turned and ran down court to get her second emphatic block of the night at the buzzer.

The Lady Eagles, who have struggled this year at the free-throw line, missed their first four of the 4th quarter and the Lady Panthers pulled within one point of the lead. However, seniors Joy Smith and Jessica Boyd kept their composure and went a combined 6-6 from the charity stripe in the last 30 seconds of the game to seal the Lady Eagles' seventh win of the season 62-51.

When asked about their win, Head Coach Jared Sellars said: "I'm really proud of our effort tonight. This team is showing a lot of heart, and I love that. LaGrange has a great program with great players and coaches, so I'm really proud of our girls for getting the win tonight."

The Lady Eagles will try to complete their sweep of the LaGrange College Classic as they face Sewanee tomorrow. Sewanee lost tonight to Huntingdon College 60-59. The Lady Eagles beat Huntingdon last night 58-56.
