GREENVILLE, South Carolina–Our Eagles Soccer team out-shot the North Central University Rams 16-13, but it was the Rams who recorded the only goal in tonight's 1-0 defeat in Greenville, SC.
Jake McClelland led the team with 3 shots in the game while
Riley Buchalski and
Kendall Mullenix each took 2 shots. Goalie
Brent Konieczynski recorded two saves in 90 minutes of work against the #1 ranked Rams.
The Eagles controlled the game throughout the opening half of soccer. The cold and rainy conditions proved difficult for both teams. The Eagles were able to move the ball effectively against a strong Rams defense, but they failed to score in the opening period. The two teams went into the half tied at 0-0.
In the 2nd half, the Eagles continued to knock on the door. Back-to-back shots by forward
Pedro Lima in the 68th and 70th minute just missed finding the back of the net. In the 72nd minute, the Rams struck with the match's first and only goal. A ball played into the box was headed into the back of the net by Dennis Morales to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Eagles mounted several late scoring efforts, but ultimately were not able to find the net in tonight's 1-0 defeat.
"We played really well and controlled most of the game." Head Coach
Joseph Liwosz said after the game, "We just weren't able to put the ball in the back of the net."
The loss puts the Eagles in a win or go home situation. The Eagles will take on Bob Jones University tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in a must-win game. The battle of South Region foes could decide the fate of the Eagles season.
When asked about tomorrow's game, Head Coach
Joseph Liwosz responded, "We need to come out mentally strong and score some goals in a must-win game."
