GREENVILLE, South Carolina–Our Eagles Soccer team kept their season alive with a huge 3-1 victory over the #5 seed Bob Jones University Bruins in their final game of pool play.
Kendall Mullenix scored two goals for the Eagles while
Nick Standridge added a 3rd with a 50-yard free kick in the 2nd half. Goalkeeper
Brent Konieczynski recorded five saves and allowed just one goal in the Eagles 3-1 victory.
In the opening moments of the 1st half, the Bruins kept the Eagles on their heels. The Bruins peppered the Eagles defense throughout the first 30 minutes of the contest, taking nine shots. The Eagles were able to weather the Bruins onslaught until their offense showed up. With 15 minutes left in the 1st half,
Kendall Mullenix found the back of the net for the Eagles off a cross by
Nick Standridge. The goal gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage at the end of the half.
The Eagles opened the second half riding some strong momentum after their late 1st half goal. However, the Eagles were not finished yet. Just six minutes into the 2nd half,
Kendall Mullenix added his second goal of the game on a breakaway to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead over the Bruins. Minutes later, a foul at midfield led to a free kick opportunity for
Nick Standridge. Nick stepped up and drilled a 50-yard free kick goal to widen the Eagles lead to 3-0. After the game
Joseph Liwosz said, "The goal was amazing. That has to be the best goal of his life." The Bruins added a goal of their own late in regulation, but the Eagles went on to secure a 3-0 victory over their South Region rivals.
"We really struggled to possess the ball in the opening minutes of the 1st half." Head Coach
Joseph Liwosz said after the game, "We were really able to put pressure on them in the 2nd half and controlled the game."
The win keeps the Eagles season alive, but they will need some help from Bob Jones University in order to advance to Saturday's NCCAA DII Men's Soccer National Championship. The Eagles will await the score of the Bob Jones University vs. North Central University matchup tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. A Bruins victory by fewer than 4 goals would push the Eagles into their 2nd consecutive championship game, but a victory by the #1 ranked North Central University Rams would end the Eagles hopes of defending their 2017 NCCAA National Championship. Stayed tuned for updates and head over the the
NCCAAÂ National Tournament Central for more information regarding the DII Men's Soccer National Tournament.
