PENSACOLA, Florida–Joy Smith finished with a double-double and a career-high in points as the Lady Eagles secured their 5th victory of the season by a score of 68-49 over Judson College in today's non-conference home match-up.
Joy Smith led all scorers in today's game with a career-high 26 points and grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds to secure her first double-double of the 2018 season. Jessica Boyd, Ashton Welborn, and Marlee Moore combined for 25 points. Haley Sailors tied Joy Smith for the team lead in assists with 4 while Sandy McElhaney led the way defensively with 4 steals.
For the second night in a row, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a hot start. The team went on an early 12-4 run in the first five minutes behind the three point shooting of Joy Smith and the interior play by Jessica Boyd and Ashton Welborn. Judson College slowly worked back into the game but ended the 1st quarter leading 21-11.
In the 2nd quarter, the Lady Eagles rode a strong shooting performance to a larger advantage. Boyd and Smith combined for 12 of the team's 19 points in the second quarter. The team shot 13-31 (41.9%) from the field and finished a blistering 7-11 (63.6%) from behind the three-point arch in the half.
The Lady Eagles offense disappeared in the 3rd quarter of action tonight. Judson College would go on to outscore the Lady Eagles 12-11 in the period and cut into the lead. But, the Lady Eagles were not finished yet. A 17-point fourth quarter helped the team secure their 5th victory of the year by a score of 68-49.
"We were a bit tired today after all of the games this past week." Head Coach Jared Sellars continued after the game, "I'd like to see us continue to work on our ball movement; we need to get the ball into the hands of our opener shooters more often."
The Lady Eagles finished the week with a 3-1 record and 1-0 in South Region play. With this week's performance, the team moved to 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in the region. The Lady Eagles will travel to LaGrange, GA next Thursday to compete in the LaGrange Panther Classic. The team will play three games against Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, and Sewanee: The University of the South.
