Eagles Fall in 50-Minute Double Overtime Thriller in South Region Quarterfinal

Game Recap:
Going into the 2026 South Region Tournament as the #4 seed, the Eagles traveled to Toccoa Falls College to open postseason play with a 12:00 PM matchup against Baptist University of Florida. In the highest-scoring game of the season for the Eagles, and one that required two overtime periods, the Eagles came up just short in the South Region quarterfinal, falling 109-112.

The Eagles could not have scripted a better start, jumping out to an incredible 13-2 lead in the opening 4:19 while shooting 6-7 from the field and holding BUF to just 1-6 shooting. Fueled by Pack and Woods combining for all 13 points, the Eagles were off to a perfect start. The next 1:43 swung in BUF's favor, however, as they went on a quick 10-2 run to get back within striking distance. With back-to-back layups by Deric Woods, assisted by Stickles and Pack, the Eagles pushed ahead 19-12. After the early runs, both teams settled in, and the remainder of the game became a high-pressure battle, with neither team leading by more than seven points over the final 45 minutes. Despite BUF outscoring the Eagles by nine in the final 12 minutes of the half, the teams entered halftime separated by just two points, 46-44, with BUF holding the lead.

In the opening 5:25 of the second half, the teams were deadlocked 12-12. After going up for a rebound, Bertinato came down with a lower leg injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the game. With senior Blaise Conlon stepping in, the Eagles responded quickly with a layup followed by a three-pointer from Gerdts, his 20th point of the night, giving the Eagles a 61-58 lead with 12:30 to play. Over the next 4:38, the Eagles outscored BUF 13-8, with Pack leading the charge with seven points during that stretch. With just three minutes left in regulation, the Eagles held an 86-79 advantage. BUF closed regulation on a 10-3 run, including a layup with 10 seconds remaining. The Eagles had a chance at the buzzer but came up short, sending the game into overtime tied 89-89.

On the first possession of overtime, Pack scored his 33rd point of the night with a layup. Back-to-back layups by Azucena and a bucket from Woods gave the Eagles a 97-93 lead with 1:58 remaining in the first overtime. BUF responded by closing the period on a 7-3 run, once again hitting a late bucket with less than 10 seconds to play. The Eagles' second buzzer-beater opportunity was defended, sending the game into a second overtime.

Azucena and Pack opened the second overtime with early buckets, giving the Eagles a four-point edge. A contested three-pointer by Pack, his 41st point of the game, pushed the Eagles ahead 107-102 with under three minutes remaining. Once again, BUF answered, trimming the deficit to 107-106. Pack hit another tough shot to give the Eagles a three-point advantage, but BUF countered with back-to-back scoring possessions to take a 112-109 lead with 16 seconds remaining. Despite two final buzzer-beater attempts, the Eagles came up short in both chances and fell in a 50-minute double overtime thriller, 109-112.

Leading the Eagles was senior Kaiden Pack, who delivered a career performance with 43 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists while playing every second of the 50-minute contest. First Team All-Region senior Liam Gerdts added 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks in 48 minutes of action. Fellow senior Deric Woods recorded 22 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in a season-high 35 minutes. Rounding out the double-figure scorers, senior Josh Azucena contributed 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in 36 minutes played.
