Eagles Fall Just Short in Back-and-Forth Battle at Mobile

Game Recap:
The Eagles battled the University of Mobile to the final minutes Saturday but fell 92-88 in a tightly contested road matchup. Neither team led by more than seven points as PCC sought its first on-court victory over the Rams in the teams' 20 meetings, with the Eagles' only previous win coming by forfeit last season.

PCC opened the game strong from beyond the arc, with Sam Boothe and John Lawrenz knocking down early three-pointers. After a brief scoring drought, Ivan Ramos connected on his first three of the season, and Paul Stickles followed with another as the Eagles scored their first 12 points from three-point range.

Mobile held a narrow advantage, but baskets from Ramos and John Lawrenz kept PCC close. Boothe later added another three-pointer to pull the Eagles within 25-23 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. After PCC held the Rams without a field goal, JR Lawrenz knocked down a three to give the Eagles a 26-25 lead, their first since leading 6-4.

The teams continued to trade baskets and defensive stops, remaining within one possession of each other for much of the opening half. Mobile stretched its lead to six with a three-pointer in the final minute, but the Eagles finished strong. A Noah Foster offensive rebound led to a John Lawrenz layup before Raul Bertinato beat the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer, cutting the deficit to 50-49.

John Lawrenz opened the second half with another three to put PCC back in front. The Eagles built their lead to seven following a Bertinato three-pointer with 17 minutes remaining, but the Rams continued to challenge.

Baskets from Ramos and Bertinato helped PCC maintain its advantage before a Mobile three-pointer put the Rams ahead by one. Bertinato answered with a layup to reclaim the lead, then later connected on his fourth three-pointer of the game to give the Eagles a 66-65 edge.

PCC eventually built a 79-73 lead with fewer than 10 minutes remaining and stayed in front until around the five-minute mark. However, after a John Lawrenz basket in the paint, the Eagles went without a field goal over the final 4:30. Free throws from Bertinato and Stickles kept PCC in contention, but the Eagles could not regain the advantage, falling 92-88. The four-point margin was Mobile's narrowest win in the series since the 2016-17 season.

John Lawrenz led the Eagles with 30 points and eight rebounds, shooting 12-18 from the field. Bertinato added a season-high 20 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, while freshman JR Lawrenz rounded out PCC's double-figure scorers with 11 points in 21 minutes.

What's Next:
The Eagles will host Southwestern Adventist University on Thursday. After splitting its first two games of the season, PCC will look to return to the win column and earn its first home victory of the 2026 season.
