Lady Eagles Come Up Short in the 3rd Place Game

Game Recap:
Following a heartbreaking semifinal loss to Simmons College, the Lady Eagles had one final chance to take the court in the 2024-2025 season. Their last matchup was the third-place game against the tournament hosts, the North Central University Rams. Despite their relentless effort, the Lady Eagles struggled to gain an edge and ultimately fell to NCU with a final score of 78-55.

The game started as a tightly contested battle, with both teams exchanging three-pointers in the opening minute. The first quarter featured three lead changes and four ties, keeping the game evenly matched. Four different Lady Eagles contributed to the early scoring, creating a balanced offensive attack that challenged NCU's defense. However, despite their efforts, the Lady Eagles trailed 16-14 at the end of the quarter, with freshman Abigail Winslow leading the charge with seven points.

As the second quarter began, the Rams went on an early 5-0 run to extend their lead, but a timely basket from Winslow stopped the momentum. A converted and-one by Sky Boyd later cut the deficit to just two points with under six minutes remaining. NCU, however, continued to push forward, and despite the Lady Eagles' resilience, the Rams held a 35-29 lead at halftime. Even though it wasn't their strongest offensive half—nearly their lowest-scoring of the season—the Lady Eagles remained within striking distance with 20 minutes to play.

The second half opened with both teams trading baskets in the first six possessions, but the Lady Eagles couldn't close the gap. After a three-pointer by Kristin Mentzer, NCU responded with an 8-0 run, holding the Lady Eagles scoreless for over four minutes. Mentzer broke the drought with four consecutive points, but the Rams remained in control, stretching their lead to 12. As the third quarter progressed, NCU continued to widen the margin, heading into the final period with a commanding 61-43 advantage.

The Lady Eagles came out strong in the fourth, opening with a 6-0 run led by Gracee Bieber's back-to-back buckets. However, their momentum stalled, as they were held to just six more points over the final eight minutes of the game. Unable to mount a comeback, the Lady Eagles fell to North Central University, 78-55.

Leading the Lady Eagles in their final game of the season was freshman Abigail Winslow, who delivered an impressive 18-point performance on 6-of-12 shooting, including 5-8 from the FT line. Graduate student Kristin Mentzer closed out her career with 13 points, while All-American Sky Boyd contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds in her final game of the season.
