Lady Eagles Defeat Toccoa Falls for their 9th South Region Championship

Game Recap:
After handling Trinity Baptist in the semifinals, the Lady Eagles set their sights on Toccoa Falls College for the 2025 South Region Championship. Holding a 2-0 regular season record against Toccoa, the Lady Eagles entered their third matchup with the Screaming Eagles confident and battle-tested. Despite it being their lowest-scoring game of the season, their relentless defense propelled them to a dominant 57-41 victory, securing the South Region Championship.

Wasting no time, the Lady Eagles stormed out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes. Freshman Abigail Winslow sparked the early surge, scoring 5 of the team's opening 8 points as they shot 3-4 from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line. However, Toccoa quickly responded with a 9-0 run of their own, seizing their first lead of the game. During this stretch, the Lady Eagles struggled offensively, going 0-9 from the field without a trip to the free-throw line. But with back-to-back buckets from Sky Boyd, they regained control and ended the first quarter with a 12-9 advantage. The second quarter saw both teams trading baskets, with the Lady Eagles maintaining a steady 4-7 point lead. Heading into halftime, they held a narrow 28-24 edge, nearly marking their lowest-scoring half of the season.

The third quarter was when Toccoa made its strongest push of the game. After an opening three-pointer by Winslow, Toccoa responded with a quick 9-2 run over two minutes, tying the game for the first time since the opening tip. Their momentum was fueled by a sharp 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc. However, a crucial offensive rebound and putback by freshman Amy Ahrens put the Lady Eagles back in front, 35-33. Following a nearly three-minute scoring drought, Toccoa drilled another three-pointer to reclaim the lead for the first time since the first quarter. As the teams traded baskets to close out the period, the Lady Eagles found themselves trailing 38-39 heading into the final frame—the first time they had entered the fourth quarter with a deficit since their January 16th matchup against Toccoa, where they trailed 43-44.

With their season on the line, the Lady Eagles delivered their most dominant defensive quarter of the year. They completely shut down Toccoa, holding them to 0-14 shooting from the field and allowing just two free throws in the entire period. Forcing nine turnovers proved to be a game-changer, as the Lady Eagles overwhelmed Toccoa in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 19-2 to seal the victory. Although the offense hit some rough patches, a key 6-0 run by Rachel Phelps—including a converted and-one followed by a quick three-pointer—helped provide the offensive spark they needed. While only six players contributed offensively, the Lady Eagles executed their defensive game plan to perfection from start to finish, leading them to a 57-41 victory and their third South Region Championship in a row!

South Region Player of the Year Sky Boyd once again led the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Abigail Winslow followed with 14 points on an efficient 5-8 shooting performance. Alissa Brewer and Amy Ahrens each added 8 points and 8 rebounds. As a team, the Lady Eagles forced 21 turnovers and tallied 12 steals, proving that defense was the key to their championship triumph.
