Eagles Fall in Penalty Shootout Heartbreaker to Toccoa Falls

Match Recap:
The Eagles men's soccer team battled through an emotional and hard-fought semifinal on Thursday night, falling in heartbreaking fashion to Toccoa Falls College in a penalty shootout after 110 minutes of intense play.

The match opened in dramatic fashion as a costly early turnover allowed Toccoa to strike first, taking a 1-0 lead just two minutes in. But the Eagles responded instantly, showing composure and grit. Less than two minutes later, Jameson Bryant drove down the endline and delivered a perfect cross to the foot of sophomore Jackson Clarke, who buried his ninth goal of the season, Bryant's fourth assist, to level the match at 1-1. Both sides continued to battle throughout a physical and evenly matched first half, but a handball call inside the box seven minutes before the break awarded Toccoa a penalty that reclaimed their lead, 2-1, heading into halftime.

The second half showcased the Eagles' relentless attacking mindset. While Toccoa dropped back defensively to protect their lead, PCC dominated possession and peppered the goal with multiple chances. Despite several close looks, the equalizer remained elusive until the 72nd minute. Off a corner kick recycle, Vieira Siqueira played the ball to Romero, who fired a low, driven cross to the back post, where sophomore center back Boaz DaSilva was waiting to slot home his third goal of the season and tie the match at 2-2. The Eagles continued to press in the final 18 minutes, including a dramatic last-second shot by Vieira Siqueira that was denied by an outstanding save from the Toccoa keeper, sending the match into overtime.

In postseason play, overtime consists of two 10-minute golden-goal periods, followed by penalty kicks if neither team scores. The first extra period saw the Eagles control possession and create the better opportunities, but fatigue and cramping began to affect both sides as time wore on. Neither team managed to break through, and after a scoreless second overtime, the semifinal advanced to penalties.

In the shootout, Boaz DaSilva's opening attempt was saved, but goalkeeper Bryce Hammond immediately answered with a save of his own. Branson Phelps converted his attempt, but subsequent misses by Ndayisaba and a late Toccoa conversion sealed the outcome. Despite the efforts of Clarke and Romero in the later rounds, Toccoa went 4-for-5 from the spot to claim the semifinal win.

What's Next:
With the semifinal loss, the Eagles' 2025 National Tournament hopes now rest on the decision of the at-large selection committee. Ranked No. 2 in the NCCAA Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the National Power Rating, the Eagles remain in a strong position for an at-large berth, but will await next week's official announcement to learn if their postseason journey continues in Kissimmee, Florida.
