Lady Eagles Defeat the Lady Bruins in Greenville

Game Recap:
After winning two region games on the road this week, the Lady Eagles aimed to go 3-0 by securing a victory over their region rival, the Lady Bruins. The last time these two teams met was in the region tournament last year, where the Lady Eagles came out on top. In the first half of this game, the Lady Eagles came out strong and led 46-38 at the break. The second half proved to be a tough battle, but the Lady Eagles held on for a narrow 76-75 win.
 
The game started with the Lady Eagles coming out strong, going on a 5-0 run, with Sky Boyd hitting a jump shot to get things started. The Lady Bruins answered with a quick run of their own, bringing the game within two points at 7-9. The Lady Eagles responded with back-to-back three-pointers from Abby Matney and Gracee Bieber, extending the lead back to 8 points, 15-7. The rest of the first quarter was a back-and-forth contest, with the Lady Bruins closing the gap to just 3 points with 30 seconds left in the quarter. Sky Boyd hit a jumper to push the lead back to 5 points, with the score at 17-12 as the quarter ended. In the second quarter, the Lady Eagles went on a run, capped off by a layup from Abigail Winslow, bringing their lead to 34-23. Mellany Bowser then caught fire! Scoring 12 straight points, including four three-pointers, to extend the Lady Eagles' lead to 46-31. The Lady Bruins responded with a 7-0 run, closing the gap to 46-38 by halftime. Mellany Bowser led the Lady Eagles at halftime with 15 points.
 
After halftime, Sky Boyd opened the scoring with a jumper. The Lady Bruins fought back, bringing the game within 3 points at 51-48. Boyd then hit a clutch jumper, sparking an 8-0 run by the Lady Eagles, which gave them a 59-48 lead. The rest of the third quarter saw both teams trading baskets, but Boyd hit a buzzer-beater to end the quarter with the Lady Eagles up 63-52. The fourth quarter the Lady Eagles struggled, as they allowed a 13-4 run by the Lady Bruins, tying the game at 67-67. With a layup by Amy Ahrens, the Lady Eagles regained the lead, 69-67. BJU responded with a three-pointer to take a 70-69 lead, the first and only lead for the Lady Bruins in this game. Sky Boyd quickly answered with two consecutive baskets to give the Lady Eagles the lead again, 73-70. The Lady Bruins scored to make it a one-point game at 73-72. With 9 seconds remaining, the Lady Bruins were forced to foul. Alissa Brewer stepped to the free-throw line and hit the first of two shots, putting the Lady Eagles up by 2. Missing the second, Amy Ahrens grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled with 6 seconds left. Ahrens hit both free throws, making it a 4-point game. The Lady Bruins did hit a buzzer-beater, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Eagles held on for the 76-75 win.
 
Sky Boyd led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Mellany Bowser, coming off the bench, made a huge impact with 16 points on 5-11 shooting from behind the arc, along with 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Abigail Winslow also had a strong performance, contributing 12 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals.
 

What's Next:
The Lady Eagles' next game is Saturday, January 25th, at home against Coastal Alabama Community College – North. This will be their first home game of the second semester, with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. The Lady Eagles will be looking to defend their home court and start the semester off strong.
