Eagles Win Their 2022 Home Opener

After their previous game against the Florida College Falcons was canceled last Thursday, the Eagles were ready for the rematch against this tough NAIA opponent. This was a back and forth game with possession changes, pace changes, and many new pieces being used by head coach Joseph Liwosz. The Eagles were able to own home field advantage and win their home opener 1-0.

The Eagles newcomers led this team to their first victory of 2022. With only eight minutes left in the first half, sophomore forward Lourenco Goncalves sent a long ball leading Eagles freshman Gideon Garcia into the goalie box, Garcia relentlessly pursued the ball and found his open teammate, fellow freshman Gabe Burton, for the wide-open, game-winning goal. Burton was the lone goal scorer in this match, leading his team offensively to their first win of the season.

Although the Florida College Falcons made a heavy push for scoring opportunities, recording thirteen shots on goal, the Eagles defensive line and goalkeeping were able to hold off their opponents. Scoring in the last minutes of the first half, the Eagles prepared themselves for a hungry and aggressive Falcons team looking to tie the game. Both the midfielders and the defenders for the Eagles were able to stifle the aggressive Florida College offensive push and hold onto this early season victory.

The Eagles will travel to Georgia this coming weekend for their match against NCAA DIII opponent LaGrange College. This will be the Eagles' second opportunity to add a road win to their name early in this 2022 season.
