On Thursday, June 2, 2022, the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) celebrated the 2022 Hall of Fame Class at the NCCAA National Convention. Former head men's basketball coach and athletic director, Mark Goetsch was among the 2022 inductees. The NCCAA announced Coach Goetsch as a member of the 2022 Hall of Fame class in late January.
"Mark Goetsch has used athletics cohesively within the NCCAA mission for 42 years." NCCAA President Dan Wood said. "It is clear to me what legacy and service given to God looks like and what it develops along the way. Mark possess a trait found in all inductees which is a heart for Kingdom work. It would be hard to calculate the full scope of impact he has had on all those he served over the years."
As the head men's basketball coach at PCC, Goetsch coached against over one hundred NCCAA opponents and non-NCCAA opponents. Among the close to five hundred student-athletes on his twenty-seven teams, there were eight All-Americans and the program's first scholar-athlete. In addition, he led his teams to two NCCAA South Regional Titles.
In 2008, Coach Goetsch was appointed PCC's athletic director. In his first year, he pioneered the start of the Lady Eagles basketball program. Eight years later, his leadership was crucial in bringing back the Eagles soccer program. From 2008 to the spring of 2020 when he stepped down as the athletic director, Eagles' programs soared. Eleven NCCAA South Regional Championships and two NCCAA National Championships were won, and teams combined for a total of twelve NCCAA National Tournament appearances.
At PCC, Coach Goetsch has been known for his humble and servant minded leadership in the classroom and on the court. What many people do not realize is the influence that Coach Goetsch has made within the NCCAA. Goetsch's role in the NCCAA began many years before he took the head coaching job at Pensacola Christian College. While in college at Maranatha Baptist Bible College (now Maranatha Baptist University), he played football, basketball, and baseball. While it is not unheard of for a student-athlete to participate in two sports, a three-sport athlete is a rarity.
Within NCCAA leadership, specifically in the South Region, Goetsch served as the South Region sport chair, the regional treasurer, and regional coordinator. On the National level, he held the national sport chair role. However, these roles were just the beginning of Coach Goetsch's leadership within the NCCAA. During his tenure as AD, Goetsch could be found almost every March at the NCCAA Pro-Am golf tournament, volunteering his time to help the NCCAA raise money for the next athletic year. His influence also played a major role in the current divisional set-up of the NCCAA. When Goetsch began his coaching career in the NCCAA, scholarship and non-scholarship schools were lumped into the same division, making it difficult for the non-scholarship schools to compete against those who gave scholarships. Coach Goetsch helped implement the current set-up where Division I schools consist of scholarship programs and Division II members are non-scholarship programs. His leadership and influence within the NCCAA continue to have a lasting impact on student-athletes and member institutions.
"I have had the great privilege to sit under Coach Goetsch's teaching in the classroom as an undergraduate student at Pensacola Christian College and now have the great honor to be his colleague," Athletic Director
Addison Calley stated. "His attention to commitment, steadfastness in whatever he's doing, and spirit of integrity shines in all that he does. His influence for Christ to all his players and students will extend through many generations."
Mark Goetsch joins former head men's basketball coach Keith Champion as a member of Eagles athletics who is part of the NCCAA Hall of Fame.
