Lady Eagles Win First Game of 2021

The Lady Eagles started off their season with one of the best records in program history at 5–1. Though they had not stepped onto the court in over four weeks, they had high hopes for continuing the strong season they had begun last semester. Their first game in the 2021 portion of their season was against the Welch College Flames, a team that, according to Coach Sellars, "always plays hard and is coached really well." Those qualities made this match-up a difficult challenge to begin with.

The long stretch off showed itself at the beginning of the game, as the Lady Eagles struggled to find the flow of the game. During the first quarter, both teams fought hard for the lead, and it bounced back and forth for a majority of the quarter. Although the Lady Eagles struggled to find the flow of the offense, five different players had put points on the board by the end of the first quarter to give the Lady Eagles the 15–12 lead.

The Lady Eagles started off the second quarter slow, and were unable to keep their lead. A 3-pointer made by Sandy McElhaney gave the Lady Eagles back the lead, and they kept it the rest of the game. The team had finally found their offensive flow. Seven different players had put points on the board in the second quarter, which allowed the Lady Eagles to outscore the Flames 26–12. Heading into halftime, the score was 41–24, one of the largest halftime leads for the Lady Eagles this season.
The offensive flow found in the second quarter was lost during the third. The Lady Eagles only made 3 baskets through the first half of the quarter, allowing the Flames to get within 7 points; but a shot made by Hope Baker turned the tides, and the Lady Eagles found their scoring rhythm. The Lady Eagles finished the quarter with a 14–7 run and a 63–47 lead.

The Lady Eagles did not let up in the fourth quarter. An 11–0 run allowed PCC to take a 27 point lead. By the end of the game, every player had stepped onto the court. The final score was 78–61.

When asked about the game, Coach Sellars made the following remarks: "Welch was a good challenge for us as we opened back up this second half of the season. We did struggle at times getting in the flow of the game but overall a great team effort and win. I'm really happy with the play of Lauran Alvarez. She scored the ball well and stepped up her defense today. Jenna Wolford continued to play strong and give us another threat on the offensive end. Hope Baker did a great job helping push the pace and get us in our offense. Amber Porter was a spark off the bench, playing with great energy and having an aggressive night on the boards."

The Lady Eagles next game is Tuesday, January 12 at Johnson University of Florida.
