Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Harry Stanley III

Eagles Handed First Home Court Loss of 2020 by Suns

The Eagles faced off against the Johnson University of Florida Suns, currently the #2 ranked team in the region, that resulted in the first 2020 home loss for the Eagles 78-96.

The Eagles stayed close to the Suns for the first few minutes of the game, answering back bucket for bucket. The Suns drove hard to the basket and found several inside scoring opportunities that began to extend their lead.

Eagles' fans got excited after Noah Rawlings faked a dribble drive and used a behind the back pass to AJ Ward for an easy bucket. The Suns started to pull away after driving the lane and drawing several and ones. The Suns also switched to a half court press and began to double team the Eagles' point guard, forcing several turnovers that converted to points for the Suns.

The Eagles and Suns continued to exchange leads several times until the two minutes before the half. The Suns utilized their athletic advantages to create open shots near the basket. At halftime the Eagles trailed by 12 points. (Eagles 40-Suns 52)

The Eagles came back from halftime with hopes of closing the score gap between them and Suns. Dakota Pratt brought the Eagles a burst of energy when he displayed an impressive block under the basket!

The Eagles kept this a 10-point game for the first twelve minutes of the second half until the Suns began to knock down several three pointers. The Eagles went on a drought for several minutes, unable to score. Austin Lewis broke the offensive silence with a long 3 pointer, bringing the Eagles within 12 points of the Suns. The Suns continued to draw light fouls when driving to the basket, which created additional scoring opportunities at the free throw line.

The Suns proceeded to extend their lead for the remainder of the game, and managed to hand the Eagles their first loss of 2020 in the nest.

Head Coach Mark Goetsch shared his thoughts on the game:  "Very talented team, currently #2 in the region. We knew they would be a challenging team on short rest. We struggled mightily on the defensive end as they broke down our perimeter players and got the paint which opened up lots of good scoring looks. We certainly need to work at improving our defense as we attempt to compete in the south region. Looking forward to a busy week with three ball games."
