Lady Eagles Fall Short in Local Matchup

Pensacola, FL - The PCC Lady Eagles took the floor today in a cross-town matchup against the University of West Florida. The UWF Argos, under the direction of head coach Stephanie Yelton, have become a leader in the Gulf South Conference (NCAA DII), and have won 20+ games the past six seasons. This is the first ever matchup between the two schools.

Our Lady Eagles were ready to be back on the court after the tough loss this past Tuesday in New Orleans.

The game went back forth for the first quarter but UWF was able to pull away a bit in the second quarter and led 24-31 at the half. The third quarter the Lady Eagles had a slow start as the size matchups became an issue. UWF was able to pull away and ended up winning the game 45-68.

This biggest issue was the points in the paint. Our Lady Eagles were outscored 34-10 in the paint and the Argos had 24 second chance points.

The Lady Eagles were very competitive in the half court but the size matchups became an issue late in the game.  Three Lady Eagles scored in double figures, Sandy McElhaney with 16 points, Caitlyn Benedik with 12 points, and Lauran Alvarez with 10 points.

Coach Sellars had this to say about the game, "I am really proud of the effort we played with today. We played a very good UWF team, that outsizes us at every position.  We competed hard for 40 minutes and learned a lot about ourselves as a team today. I was really impressed with our help defense, which was a point of focus that the team really stepped up. Also, I want to mention our bench players, they don't always see good minutes, but they were locked in today, as usual.  Our schedule has been tough, and we have had several key injuries, but we are working and getting better every game. I am ready to be back playing at home tomorrow."
