Eagles Challenge NAIA Opponent in Final Home Match

Tonight's match was against Georgia Gwinnett College (Grizzlies), a tough top 25 NAIA opponent. This was also the Eagles final home match of the season.

The Grizzlies started the match with an aggressive midfield press against the Eagles, looking for opportunities to score. Ten minutes into the match Hayden Hoffman made a long pass to Riley Buchalski who dribbled past the defense and scored the Eagles first goal! The Eagle's started the match off with an early lead over Gwinnett 1-0.

The Grizzlies answered back four minutes later with their first goal by Oscar Sommerkamp tying the Eagles 1-1 just 14 minutes into the match.

The Eagles and Grizzlies exchanged goal attempts for the next fifteen minutes until the Eagles were awarded a corner kick. As soon as Jake McClelland inbounded his corner kick, Clint Peterson snuck into position. Clint Peterson received Jake McClelland's inbounds kick and headed the ball over the defense and goal keeper, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead over their opponent!

Just 5 minutes later the Grizzlies were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The Eagles lined up to protect their goal but were unsuccessful in blocking the free kick. The kick headed straight toward Grizzlies player, Oscar Sommerkamp, who maneuvered ball to the unprotected side of the Eagles' goal. This goal by Oscar Sommerkamp tied the Eagles and Grizzlies 2-2 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Just 3 minutes later Oscar Sommerkamp crept in past the defense and found his way into a 1 on 1 with the Eagles goal keeper. Oscar faked to the left and gently pushed the ball into the right side of the goal. The Grizzlies took the lead 3-2 over the Eagles after Oscar's third goal with 8 minutes left in the first half.

The second half of the match carried a much slower pace than the first half. Although the Grizzlies' aggressive offense was successful the first half, they were unable to penetrate the Eagles defense the entire second half. The Eagles' offense fought hard but was unable to secure a third goal in the second half of the match. The match ended with a 2-3 loss for the Eagles.

Coach Liwosz said the following, "We went into the match knowing it would be another tough fight going up against a top 25 NAIA opponent. We came out strong and very confident with the opening goal. We did struggle to stop them in the air which is what hurt us in the end but I am very proud of the heart and achievements that our team made. Although we didn't get the victory, I am happy with how we played and with the result that we got last night."

Next match is Monday, October 28 against NCAA DII opponent University of West Florida.
