Lady Eagles Dominate Suns in Home Opener

Pensacola, FL—Our Lady Eagles volleyball (4-2) went on to secure a 3-1 set victory (25-13, 25-23, 25-15, 25-13) over Johnson University of Florida in their first home game of the 2018 season.

Baylee Jensen led the team with 19 kills in the match, while junior's Hannah Adkins and Hannah Grooms combined for 39 assists for the Lady Eagles. Libero Anna Grace Carrick led the team defensively with a game-high 13 digs from the back row.

The Lady Eagles, feeding off the energy from an electric home crowd of 1000+ fans, opened the first set strong. Led by sophomore transfer Baylee Jensen, the team jumped out to a quick 10-1 start in the match. Jensen would hammer home 8 kills in the opening set on the way to a 25-13 victory for the Lady Eagles over the Suns.

The second set was a back and forth battle between the two NCCAA conference foes. The Lady Eagles got off to another fast start but were unable to shake the pesky Suns. Despite leading early, the Suns battled back to secure a tightly contested 25-23 victory in the 2nd set.

In the third set, the Lady Eagles would take control of the match. The team's offensive attack led by Baylee Jensen, Natasha Dickerman, and Hannah Harmon would prove to be the difference maker. The Lady Eagles finished the 3rd set with a hitting percentage of .348 compared to just .053 for the visiting Suns. The Lady Eagles also won the battle at the net by recording 13 kills compared to just 5 for Johnson University of Florida.

The fourth and final set again provided an early lead for the Lady Eagles over the Suns. With the early lead in hand, the team began to pull away due in large part to the strong defensive play of junior libero Anna Grace Carrick and other on the back row. Strong serve reception and passing ultimately led to several great looks for the Lady Eagles big hitters. The team would go on to secure a 4th set victory by a score of 25-13.

In the match, the Lady Eagles recorded a season high 50 kills, with 19 coming from Baylee Jensen. The team finished the match with a hitting percentage of .220 compared to -.054 for the visiting Suns. The defense of the Lady Eagles led by Anna Grace Carrick and company also played a crucial role in the game by securing 57 digs and 50 successful service receptions.

With the victory, the Lady Eagles moved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in SOUTH Region play. The team will return to the court tomorrow night against Pensacola State College at 6:00 pm CT in the Arlin R. Horton Sports Center Arena.
