Lady Eagles Advance to South Region Championship

Pensacola, FL — Our Lady Eagles secured an 80-43 victory over Toccoa Falls College to advance to their fourth South Region Championship game in the last five years. The Lady Eagles will take on Trinity College of Florida on Saturday in their quest to secure an automatic bid into the NCCAA National Tournament.

"We didn't shoot the ball really well tonight," Head Coach Jared Sellars said after the game. "We went 6-31 from behind the three-point arch, but these girls made up for their poor shooting by competing so hard tonight."

The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead behind the dominant post play by center Marlee Moore. She would go on to score six of her game high 14 points in the first quarter of action. Led by the play of Marlee Moore, the Eagles would end the quarter leading 16-6 over Toccoa Falls College.

Heading into the 2nd quarter, the team looked to grow their 10-point advantage. Back-to-back-to-back three pointers by Lady Eagles guards Haley Sailors and Jessica Boyd helped the team stretch their lead to 14 points just four minutes into the 2nd quarter. The Lady Eagles defense stepped up in the 2nd quarter, holding Toccoa Falls College to just 6 points. Buoyed by the strong play of their guards and their smothering defense, the Lady Eagles would head into the half with a commanding 35-12 advantage, despite being out-rebounded in the 1st half.

"We were being out-rebounded at the half." Head Coach Jared Sellars continued, "We made rebounding an emphasis at halftime. Our girl's took this information to heart and really dominated on the boards in the 2nd half."

In the 3rd quarter, the Lady Eagles began to further distance themselves from Toccoa Falls College. The play of Haley Sailors helped the Lady Eagles build on their halftime advantage. Her five points in the opening minutes of the third quarter helped the Lady Eagles stretch their advantage to 31 points with six minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. The team would go on to build their lead to a high point of 35 with less than a minute to go in the quarter. Heading into the 4th quarter, the Lady Eagles held a 60-30 lead over Toccoa Falls College.

In the 4th quarter, the Lady Eagles continued to have their way on offense. Led by Joy Smith and bevy of other scorers, the team would go on to complete a dominant 80-43 victory over the fifth seeded Toccoa Falls College. Despite trailing early on, the team would go on to hold the lead for 38 of the ball game's 40 minutes.

"We had a definite size advantage over Toccoa [Falls College] and were able to take advantage of that," Coach Jared Sellars said after the game. "Marlee [Moore] played a solid game statistically and played a huge part in us scoring 46 points in the paint."

Junior guard Joy Smith led the Lady Eagles with 19 points in the ball game. She was one of three Lady Eagles who scored in double-digits–Smith (19), Moore (14), and Sailors (12). Despite the slow shooting performance in the 1st half, the Lady Eagles rebounded to shoot 34.5% from the field in the contest. Marlee Moore finished the game with a 14-point and 13-rebound double-double, her fourth double-double of the season.

With the win, the Lady Eagles advanced to another NCCAA South Region Championship where the team will take on Trinity College of Florida on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. CT. The winner of the South Region tournament will secure an automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament hosted on the campus of Bob Jones University on March 6-10. Tomorrow's regional championship game will be livestreamed here.
