Lady Eagles Unable to Complete 2nd Half Comeback

MONTGOMERY, Alabama–A 3rd quarter surge was not enough for our Lady Eagles on the road against Faulkner University. Despite cutting the lead to just 4 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the team would go on to drop tonight's non-conference road match-up 72-57.

Joy Smith led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 10 points while Haley Sailors, Jessica Boyd, and Sandy McElhaney chipped in a combined 24 points. Senior Ashton Welborn grabbed a team-leading 10 boards while Lauren Alvarez recorded a team-high four assists in tonight's contest.

In the 1st quarter, the Lady Eagles got off to a slow start offensively, which was magnified by the hot-shooting performance of the Faulkner University Eagles. Three made three-point fields by Faulkner University helped propel them to an early 23-14 advantage. However, the pesky Lady Eagles would hang around in the 2nd. Led by the play of Joy Smith, the team was able to keep the deficit to just 10 points heading into halftime.

Right after halftime, Faulkner University quickly widened their lead to as many as 15 points, but the Lady Eagles did not break. They went on to stage a late rally, but still trailed by four after three quarters of play. Despite the team's best efforts in the 4th quarter, Faulkner University behind the play of center Angela Grant who finished the game with 30 points on 14-16 shooting would go on to net a 72-57 victory over the Lady Eagles.

"Our guards [Joy and Sandy] really played with some high intensity and gave us a shot in the arm when we needed it." Head Coach Jared Sellars said after the game, "Faulkner University is a very good squad and tonight they were the better team. We need to continue working on the little things."

With the loss, the Lady Eagles dropped to 1-1 in the early stages of the 2018 campaign. The Lady Eagles will return home for their home-opener on Friday, November 2 against Point University at 4:00 p.m.
