Led by a strong defensive performance, our Eagles soccer team secured a 0-0 tie in double overtime over Faulkner University in today's non-conference matchup.
Our Eagles soccer team came into today's contest against Faulkner University looking to avenge an ugly road loss just a few weeks prior. The team had lost to the visiting Eagles just two weeks ago on the road in Montgomery, AL 6-1.
Early in the first half, the lineup changes that Head Coach
Joseph Liwosz made for this match-up began to pay dividends. The Eagles defense, which has been shaky during the early parts of this season, got some much-needed reinforcements. Junior forward
Nick Standridge along with senior
Travis Rose were both inserted into the Eagles back line.
The move payed off for the Eagles in this one. Despite giving up 10 shots in the opening period, the Eagles defense, led by
Nick Standridge, was able to keep the visiting Eagles from finding the back of the net. Goalie
Brent Konieczynski also played a huge role, saving six shots in the opening period to keep the score knotted at zero heading into the half.
Coming out of halftime, the Eagles hoped to ride their newfound confidence to a good result against a very strong Faulkner University squad. Early in the 2nd half, the Eagles began to pressure the back line of Faulkner University. The team created several scoring opportunities, but they were ultimately unable to capitalize.
Faulkner University again peppered the Eagles defensive line, taking nine shots in the 2nd period. The Eagles defense bent, but did not break. With the clock ticking down in the 2nd half, the Eagles hoped to come away with a strong result. A flurry of corner kicks late in the half gave Faulkner University an opportunity to steal a victory from the Eagles. But, the Eagles defense was able to withstand the onslaught at the end of regulation to keep the score level at 0-0.
In the overtime periods, it was again Faulkner University that proved to be the aggressor. The visiting Eagles took 12 shots in the final 20 minutes of the game, but
Brent Konieczynski continued to make save after save, finishing the contest with 14 crucial saves. The game would go on to end in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods. The tie was the first tie in the Eagles brief history.
After the game, Head Coach
Joseph Liwosz was incredibly proud of his team's performance. He said, "Everybody played phenomenal today, whether it was the starters or the role players, everyone stepped up." He continued, "This team has improved tremendously over the last couple of weeks; they have greatly improved their communication which has led to better results!"
With today's result, the Eagles moved to 2-9-1 on the season and secured a much-needed result against a very quality Faulkner University squad. The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, October 13 at home when they take on NCCAA #1 ranked Trinity Baptist College, a team the Eagles beat four times in the 2017 season. The matchup between the two SOUTH Region heavyweights will be their first matchup since meeting in the 2017 NCCAA DII Men's Soccer National Championship, a game that the Eagles won 1-0.
