Right from the tip-off of Saturday's home basketball game, our Lady Eagles looked to be in complete control against Wesleyan College. Our Lady Eagles came into the contest having lost earlier in the week to Faulkner University, but were sitting at 2-1 on the season. Coming into the game, the Lady Eagles were hoping to see their high-powered offense show up, one that has averaged 55 points per game in the early going.
Wesleyan College quickly jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the game, but the Lady Eagles would go on a 21-10 run to close out the first quarter and held a 22-14 lead at the break. Freshman guard
Elise Cauthen helped spark the run with 5 points off the bench in the first quarter.
Heading into the 2nd quarter, our Lady Eagles were looking to widen their lead before halftime. They spread the scoring out during the 2nd quarter with six Lady Eagles scoring. At the half, they were sitting on a 35-22 lead over the visiting Wesleyan College Wolves.
In the 3rd quarter, the Lady Eagles came out flat. Freshman
Hope Baker poured in two early three-pointers and senior guard
Joy Smith added a clutch three-pointer toward the end of the quarter. But Wesleyan College would prove to be too much for the Lady Eagles and outscored them 13-11 in the 3rd quarter, bringing the score to 46-35 in favor of our Lady Eagles.
The 4th quarter would again go the Lady Eagles way. They were able to outscore the visiting Wesleyan College Wolves 21-14 in the 4th quarter to give themselves a 67-49 victory.
On the night, senior
Joy Smith added 12 points while
Jessica Boyd added 10 points. Bench points were a key to the victory. Led by freshman
Hope Baker and
Elise Cauthen who scored 10 and 9 points respectively, the Lady Eagles would outscore Wesleyan College's bench 33-11.
Marlee Moore and
Ashton Welborn each added 9 rebounds for the Lady Eagles in the victory. When asked after the game for a positive take away from the matchup, Head Coach
Jared Sellars responded, "I was really happy to see our bench play as well as they did. They provided us with the spark that we were looking for. Elise and Hope were huge for us."
With the victory, the Lady Eagles move to 3-1 on the season and raised their points per game average to 58. The Lady Eagles will play three games this coming week against quality opponents as they host the annual Lady Eagles Invitational Tournament. They will look to further stake their claim as one of the top NCCAA DII Women's Basketball programs.
