For the first three quarters of tonight's game, Randall University looked to be in control of the ball game. Led by sharpshooter Olivia Wells, who would go on to score 20 points on the evening, the Saints would lead for the first 32 minutes of tonight's heavyweight contest.
Despite trailing at the half, our Lady Eagles began to show signs of life in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Eagles were able to put together several strong defensive possessions and added several timely buckets. Junior guard
Joy Smith stepped up for the Lady Eagles when they needed it most, pouring in 12 points in the 3rd quarter. After the game,
Joy Smith said, "I knew the energy had to come from one person." She later added, "The fans tonight were huge. That was the loudest I have ever heard it in here. Without them, we don't get tonight's victory."
Heading into the 4th quarter, the Lady Eagles looked to ride the momentum that they had created early in the 3rd quarter. A few early baskets led to the Lady Eagles first lead of the evening, but Randall University would not go away.
Joy Smith would again step up, but this time she had help. Teammate
Jessica Boyd would step up as well by adding several key buckets down the stretch.
Despite her early season struggles, junior
Jessica Boyd was able to find it when it mattered most. When asked after the game about her performance she simply said, "It's about time I showed up!"
The Lady Eagles would go on to outscore Randall University by a margin of 25-16 in the crucial 4th quarter. Head Coach
Jared Sellars said, "I am proud of our girls; they gutted it out tonight. We did not have our best stuff tonight, but were able to bear a very good opponent. We are excited to get a big win in front of our home crowd."
Although the Lady Eagles have seen several key early season performances by their freshmen, tonight was a different story. On the evening, the Lady Eagles got key contributions from their seasoned veterans –
Joy Smith,Â
Jessica Boyd,
Marlee Moore, and
Ashton Welborn. After the game, Head Coach
Jared Sellars said, "We won tonight's contest because our experienced players stepped up. We have had some great performances early on by our freshmen, but we needed to see our leaders play well, and tonight they did." This group, headlined by
Joy Smith's 22 points and 5 rebounds performance, helped carry the Lady Eagles. On the evening, they would score 53 of the Lady Eagles points and added 36 rebounds.
With tonight's victory, the Lady Eagles moved to 5-1 on the season and scored a crucial victory over one of the top NCCAA DII Women's Basketball programs. The Lady Eagles will play their next game against Florida College tomorrow at home.
